The Bentley’s are Coming!

The Bentley Drivers Club is planning to bring a group of cars to Maclean’s Bridge at Lakeside 2012, and they’re hopeful of having as many as 6 WO Bentley’s in the group. The WO’s have a rich history of involvement in motorsport, and were victorious at Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1030. All students of motorsport will want to see these cars, and we understand that at least some of the cars that will be on display have solid Le Mans credentials.

Club Pre-Registration Simplified.

The form for Club Pre-registration has been simplified. Clubs no longer have to indicate the name, car and class for each pre-registrant, just the number of cars. Participation in field-class judging remains voluntary, and in the Pack sent back to the Club will be sufficient Class Sheets should every pre-registrant wish to be judged in the field class of their choice. Please see club Pre-Registration Form under Multi Marque display.

Watch out for the Deadlines!

There are strict deadlines for registration for the major activities at Maclean’s Bridge at Lakeside 2012. They are:

  • InterClub Regularity Championship – fully subscribed as at 16 December 2011. (There is a waiting list for possible replacement teams. If you would like to join this list with your Club team, contact Daryl Tonkin on 3388 2417).
  • Pickles Sports and Classic Car Auction – 5 May 2012. The lead time to the auction (on 20 May 2012) is necessary for photographs and catalogue preparation.
  • Club/Marque Display Pre-Registration – 3 May 2012. The incentives for pre-registration have been listed elsewhere. This date allows for Packs to be received by the Club and for program preparation.
  • Concours d’Elegance – 20 April 2012. This early date is necessary for program preparation.
  • Concours de Facsimile – 20 April 2012. As for the Concours d’Elegance

Early Applications/Registrations Looking Good!

There are already multiple applications for both the Concours d’Elegance and the Concours de Facsimile. This is much earlier than for the 2011 event, so maybe the 2012 Concourss will be fully subscribed earlier than we thought. If you are intending to enter either of the Concours, it would be wise to get your entry in soon. They are both capped and earlier entries, once accepted, cannot be displaced by a later entry no matter how good the car. Once the cap is reached with accepted cars, all applications will simply be returned. ‘First in, best dressed’ seems the fairest system here.

InterClub Regularity Championship Proving Popular

In the first few weeks of acceptances, the InterClub Regularity Championship (19 May 2012) has shown a strong uptake rate. There are already 15 confirmed teams, and 6 others have expressed interest.  If your Club plans to enter a team, early submission would seem necessary to avoid disappointment.  Make sure you appoint a Team Captain and try for a distinctive/catchy Team name.  Entry forms are elsewhere on this site.

Win a restored sports car – and support the Spinal Injuries Association.

The Restoration Theatre for 2012 will feature a group of apprentices finalising the restoration of a Triumph TR7 over the two days (19-20 May 2012).  We hope that this experience may trigger longer-term interest in sports and classic cars for the apprentices.  The TSOAQ (and the sponsor) will underwrite all expenses for this project, and the car and many of the parts required have already been sourced.

The car will be raffled and the winner will be announced at the completion of the Awards Presentation on 20 May 2012.  All money made will go the Spinal Injuries Association.  You can learn about the Spinal Injuries Association at www.spinal.com.au .  Tickets will be on sale both days at the event, but if you’d like to support this project and can’t make it to Lakeside for the event, get in touch with the Spinal Injuries Association.

Maclean’s Bridge at Lakeside 2012 part of National Motoring Heritage Day

Here is another good reason to plan to be at Lakeside 20 May 2012.

The National Motoring Heritage Day is an initiative of the Australian Historic Motoring Federation (AHMF) to show the flag and demonstrate the strength of the motoring enthusiasts’ movement in Australia.  In Queensland, it is driven by the Queensland Historic Motoring Council (QHMC).  The National Heritage Motoring Day will be held on 20 May 2012, and the intent is to have as many historic vehicles on the road on the day as possible.

Maclean’s Bridge at Lakeside is an important destination for 20 May 2012.  All the cars on display, the sports cars, the racers, and the classics, have a place in the history of motoring in Australia.  The link to the National Motoring Heritage Day is further emphasised by the field class for Heritage vehicles, and the QHMC is hopeful of mounting a special Heritage Day display of vehicles from 1902 with an example car from the start of each decade to 1952.
